In carrying out the Comoros Citizens’ Voices project, the European Union and CFI are pursuing several objectives: to boost the country’s media offering, to support the promotion of a more inclusive representation of Comorian society, and to support citizen participation by offering interactive formats conducive to the sharing of ideas and public debate. To achieve this, the agency has put in place a number of opportunities to support media professionals in the transition to a dynamic and inclusive media landscape.
One of the main aims of the Comoros Citizens’ Voices project is to strengthen the capabilities of media professionals. To underline this ambition, at the project launch conference held in Moroni (Comoros) on 16 November 2023, the main media outlets reaffirmed the importance of providing training in the print, audiovisual and online media for the public and private sectors in Comoros.
“With Comoros Citizens’ Voices, we will have to respond to a strong demand for training from journalists in the Comoros and their need to exist on the web, but also to create a real digital identity.
Renaud Carvalho, CFI project manager
A month later, the first concrete results of the project are already appearing, in anticipation of the start of operations in 2024. In preparation for the election of the President of the Comoros on 14 January 2024, the Comores Citizens’ Voices team recorded an interactive programme in the studios of the Comoros Radio and Television Office on 12 December 2023. The fascinating and interactive discussions with the audience focused on the responsibility and ethics of media professionals, the importance of electoral education, the balanced presentation of opinion trends and in-depth coverage of subjects that reflect the concerns of Comorian men and women. This initiative was a perfect fit with the aim of Comores Citizens’ Voices to offer high-quality, inclusive and participatory media content that would promote peaceful and democratic public debate in the Comoros.
