Shared Horizons

Combating disinformation and nationalist rhetoric in the Western Balkans

The project is primarily aimed at young people aged 18 to 30 in the Western Balkans, particularly those living in remote areas with limited access to reliable information. In 2025, the flagship initiative was the travelling truck, the Balkan News Truck!

Democratic governance Misinformation Young people

As the flagship initiative of the Shared Horizons project—which aims to combat disinformation and nationalist rhetoric by strengthening young people’s engagement and the professional development of future journalists in the Western Balkans, the Balkan News Truck is a truly mobile media and information literacy (MIL) platform

On the winding roads of the Western Balkans, a truck unlike any other has made its mark. More than just a logistical tool or a mere symbol, the Balkan News Truck established itself, from September to November 2025, as a mobile space for dialogue, learning and the exchange of ideas.

Discussions right on the doorstep of local residents

At every stop, the same routine: a village square or town centre, chairs being set out, microphones being tested, and, above all, voices being heard. In areas often far removed from major media initiatives, the van has sparked discussions where they are otherwise scarce. Misinformation, nationalist narratives, the role of the media: sensitive topics, tackled head-on, closely tied to local realities.

A grassroots movement rooted in local communities

Over three months, this travelling editorial team visited 20 towns across 6 countries. Behind these stops, a network of 17 local partners and 51 contributors (59 per cent of whom were women) helped to organise 73 activities (totalling 150 hours!). Media literacy workshops, public debates and informal discussions: all these formats were used to capture attention, stimulate reflection and provide tools.

Young people at the heart of the initiative

But the impact of the Balkan News Truck is measured above all by the people it brought together. More than 1,518 people, mostly young people, came to question the news, debate and also produce content. Because here, it wasn’t just about listening, but about taking action. This is evidenced by the more than 250 pieces of content produced and broadcast in collaboration with local media, extending the reach of each stop far beyond the truck’s visit.

Producing, debating and sharing information

Supported by the Horizons Partagés project, this unique initiative highlights a simple truth: the fight against disinformation cannot be imposed; it must be built. On the ground, over the long term, in direct contact with the public. By choosing to reach out to citizens, the Balkan News Truck turned the usual approach on its head. And, along the way, it opened up spaces where information once again becomes a common good to be shared.
