It all began with the media coverage of the second International Forum on Yemen (FIY) by two journalists, a woman and a man, from Aden and Sana’a (Yemen). This Forum was held in The Hague (Netherlands) from 12 to 15 June 2023, with over 250 participants committed to promoting dialogue and restoring peace in Yemen. Their coverage was supported by CFI. The two journalists relayed the discussions and conclusions of the various sessions live. To ensure wide distribution, CFI also supported the setting up of a newsroom where more than 20 interviews were conducted and broadcast: more than 2,000 people followed or subscribed to the channel dedicated to the newsroom. In addition, the content broadcast reached more than 1.8 million Yemenis via various social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. The two Yemeni journalists were also invited by Monte Carlo Doualya (MCD) to talk about the FIY and the situation of women in Yemen.
Building on this momentum, the Yamaniyat project was officially launched in October 2023 at a webinar attended by over 100 journalists and representatives of the Yemeni government, civil society organisations and media institutions from various Yemeni governorates.
Everyone expressed great enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of strengthening cooperation between media institutions, journalists and civil society organisations to promote peace in Yemen. Alongside the French ambassador to Yemen, Catherine Corm Kammoun, who praised CFI’s efforts to make “the voices of Yemeni women heard”, the Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs supported the project:
“I welcome the efforts of CFI and the Studies and Economic Media Centreto build the capacity of Yemeni journalists, and in particular to raise their awareness of gender-based violence and promote women’s involvement in peacebuilding”.
Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs
