Medialogue

Supporting media outlets in Central Asia

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shook media outlets in Central Asia, curbing their freedom of expression and the publication or broadcasting of impartial news. The Medialogue project aims to analyse the influence of Russian propaganda in this region, identify key stakeholders on the media scene and build their fact-checking and investigation capacities to counter this pressure.

The project started with an in-depth analysis of media outlets in four Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), paying particular attention to issues involving Russian disinformation. This analysis helped to map the media scene in each of these countries.

Sharing experiences of pushing back against disinformation

From 6 to 8 May 2024, the first Forum of Journalists of Central Asia was held in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), attended by over 150 people (journalists, representatives of media organisations, academics and media experts), from France, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Each day was devoted to one of the main themes: pushing back against disinformation, seeking new audiences and security for information and journalists.

This event was a unique occasion to discuss issues such as disinformation but also to bolster the journalists’ network. They face similar issues, yet rarely have the opportunity to meet up to discuss their experiences and build projects together. The event had the support of the Uzbek authorities and enjoyed great media coverage in the region.
