The use of artificial intelligence, the fight against disinformation, climate change, support for media in exile: how can we provide better information in the future? With its partners AfricTivistes, Africa Check and Arab Reporters for investigative journalism (ARIJ), CFI has organised a new Media and Development Forum to enable its media partners from Africa, Asia, Europe and the Arab world to debate, question and compare their views on all these issues.
Debates and workshops also focused on development aid in the media sector, the role of Open Source INTelligence (OSINT) in journalistic investigation and the best solutions for supporting media in exile.
The French Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, Chrysoula Zacharoupoulou, after announcing the launch of the Media and Development roadmap, reminded a packed room of the ambition to make Paris the world capital of the fight against disinformation, illustrating France’s commitment to free, high-quality information.
The forum was also an opportunity to confirm the bond of trust that exists between CFI and its main donors (Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, French Development Agency, European Union, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, International Organisation of the Francophonie) as well as with its French media partners (Reporters sans frontières, Agence France Presse, Cartooning for Peace, RFI, France24, Monte Carlo Doualiya).
It also gave the agency the opportunity to welcome a large number of European and North American operators: Fondation Hirondelle (Switzerland), Free Press Unlimited (Netherlands), DWA (Germany), International Fund for Public Interest Media, Thomson Foundation and ARTICLE 19 (UK), Internews (USA), International Media Support (Denmark), Equal Rights & Independent Media (European and North American), members like CFI of the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) also represented, as is the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) network.
Above all, the event provided a rare and much-appreciated opportunity to bring together people working in the media from countries that may be very different, but who share the same commitment to freedom of expression and quality information.
“This forum was an excellent opportunity to acquire knowledge, exchange experiences and meet experts from different countries. Thank you to CFI for allowing me to talk about my “Climate School” initiative and our hard work over the past two years to provide free training to over 600 journalists in the North Africa and Middle East region”.
