In 2024, PAGOF 2 provided technical assistance in Côte d’Ivoire and Tunisia, for journalists and others in media outlets, civil society organisations (CSOs) and government administrations via training courses, mentoring and support for content production. 15 journalists (eight in Tunisia and seven in Côte d’Ivoire) thus benefitted from two datajournalism training courses and support to produce reports, computer graphics, mapping and investigations, led by an international expert and two trainers from each country.
The first 6-day session focussed on the basic tools used to obtain, analyse and publish open data, as well as the basics of journalistic investigation. Following on from this course, local trainers supported the journalists as they produced and published or broadcast datajournalism content in their media outlets. The second 6-day session focussed on more advanced datajournalism techniques, such as the processing of mapping data and viewing interactive data, and putting together investigative subjects that each journalist produced for the project.
Each beneficiary journalist was allocated 500 euros funding to cover investigation-related expenses. These journalists are now capable of producing investigative reports on sensitive subjects in various contexts using open data and skills acquired during these two courses.
“PAGOF 2 operates in countries with greatly varying political and social backgrounds. So it is essential to find out about and adapt to these specifics for the project to have the greatest possible impact. This makes the implementation of activities especially stimulating and emphasises the importance of a context-based approach to ensure the success of projects across various countries.”
Hortense Tollu, PAGOF 2 Project Director at CFI
